His father was a London banker who was opposed to religious enthusiasm and his mother was Jemima Foudrinier from a French Huguenot family.

Education:

Great Ealing College. Trinity College, Oxford.

Chronology/Biography of Cardinal John Henry Newman:

1824: Ordained as a Deacon in Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. Becomes curate of St Clement's Church in Oxford.

1825: Ordained as a priest.

1826: Becomes a tutor at Oriel College, Oxford.

1828: Becomes vicar of St Mary's Church

1838: Becomes the editor of the journal"The British Critic".

1842: Moves to Littlemore.

1843: Retracts his anti-Catholic statements but resigns from St Mary's Church.

1845: Enters the Catholic Church.

1846: Ordained to the priesthood.

1848: Founding of the Oratory in Birmingham.

1877: Elected as an honorary fellow of Trinity College, Oxford.

1879: Becomes a Cardinal.

Due to vandalism the grave site of Cardinal Newman has been fenced off at the Lickey Hills, Birmingham
The coffin was supposed to have been taken to the Birmingham Oratory in 2009 but the grave was empty.
